Selfridge Heritage Series
Brig. Gen. William Mitchell sits in a Curtiss R-6 biplane at Selfridge Field on or about Oct. 18, 1922, while participating in the National Airplane Races at Selfridge. During the event, Mitchell set an "official" air speed record of 224.05 miles per hour, while flying a course over Lake St. Clair. Several days earlier, Lt. Russell L. Maughan had flown at 248.5 miles per hour, but the official observers had not yet arrived at Selfridge to verify that feat.
