Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, the second chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force, is seen in this photo taken from a 1951 newspaper clipping. Vandenberg was at what is now known as Selfridge Air National Guard Base for the dedication of a new base housing area that had been named in honor of the general’s uncle, U.S. Sen. Arthur H. Two U.S. Coast Guardsmen, Air Station Detroit, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Michigan, train in water rescue using an MH-65 Dolphin aircraft here, Jan. 7, 2023. Air Station Detroit’s primary missions are search and rescue, law enforcement, domestic icebreaking operations, marine environmental protection, rotary wing air intercept and mission support for more than 200 local, state and federal agencies within an area of responsibility encompassing more than 1,100 miles of shoreline from Saginaw Bay to the St. Lawrence seaway.
