Douglas Upchurch, director of Defense Intelligence Agency’s Joint Reserve Intelligence Program; Mr. Dennis Biddick, deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for reserve affairs; and Rear Adm. Gordon Russell, commander of the Information Dominance Corps Reserve Command. The men cut the ribbon during a dedication ceremony Sept. 6, 2013, at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich. Michigan's DFC
Russell "Luff" Meredith is believed to be one of only two pilots to have earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for a flight that took place solely in Michigan. He earned the medal for being part of a 1923 rescue mission from Selfridge Field to Beaver Island, in northwest Lake Michigan. After World War II, he was awarded another unusual award, the Soviet Order of the Patriotic War, 1st Class. The West Point graduate retired as a colonel in 1945. (U.S. Army photo)

Dr. Robert Armstrong stands in front of a De Havilland DH-4 on Lake Charlevoix on Feb. 7, 1923. Armstrong, a doctor in Charlevoix, flew on the aircraft to Beaver Island on that date to respond to a medical emergency. The pilot is Army Air Service Capt. Russell “Luff” Meredith. The flight resulted in the first of only two Distinguished Flying Cross believed to have been awarded for flights that took place solely in the state of Michigan. A De Havilland DH-4 sits on the ice on Lake Charlevoix prior to a flight to Beaver Island on Feb. 7, 1923. The military aircraft flew from Selfridge Field, near Detroit, to pick up a doctor and then make the short flight to Beaver Island in Lake Michigan as part of a rescue mission. The pilot was Capt. Russell L. “Luff” Meredith. At the time, Meredith was assigned to the First Pursuit Group, then stationed at Selfridge.
