Selfridge hosts air show in 1924

Approximately 15,000 spectators observe aerial demonstrations during an air show at Selfridge Field, Michigan, Sep. 14, 1924. During the event, airplane rides by lottery were available to civilians. The local newspaper reported that a woman, incensed at her exclusion from the flights, attempted an appeal to air service officials in Washington, D.C., but was informed that official orders specified, "women shall not fly in government airplanes."
