Jim Loomis, a retired Coast Guard pilot, speaks during the presentation of the Lt. Jack C. Rittichier trophy to Detroit Lions rookie Casey Pierce, at U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Detroit at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Nov. 23, 2015. The award is presented annually to a member of the Kent State University football team who demonstrates the leadership traits associated with Rittichier, a former Air Station Detroit pilot who was killed in action while serving as a rescue pilot in Vietnam in 1968. Behind Loomis are Commander Marshall Branch, executive officer of Air Station Detroit; Brig. Gen. John D. Slocum, commander of Selfridge Air National Guard Base; and Pierce, a tight end with the Lions. Pierce graduated from Kent State University in Ohio. He was joined at the ceremony by several Lions teammates who took a tour of Coast Guard operations at Selfridge and signed autographs for local service personnel.
