A De Havilland DH-4 sits on the ice on Lake Charlevoix prior to a flight to Beaver Island on Feb. 7, 1923. The military aircraft flew from Selfridge Field, near Detroit, to pick up a doctor and then make the short flight to Beaver Island in Lake Michigan as part of a rescue mission. The pilot was Capt. Russell L. “Luff” Meredith. At the time, Meredith was assigned to the First Pursuit Group, then stationed at Selfridge. The flight resulted in the first of only two Distinguished Flying Cross believed to have been awarded for flights that took place solely in the state of Michigan.
