Dr. Robert Armstrong stands in front of a De Havilland DH-4 on Lake Charlevoix on Feb. 7, 1923. Armstrong, a doctor in Charlevoix, flew on the aircraft to Beaver Island on that date to respond to a medical emergency. The pilot is Army Air Service Capt. Russell “Luff” Meredith. The flight resulted in the first of only two Distinguished Flying Cross believed to have been awarded for flights that took place solely in the state of Michigan. At the time, Meredith was assigned to the First Pursuit Group, then stationed at Selfridge. (Photo courtesy of the Charlevoix Historical Society)
