Russell "Luff" Meredith is believed to be one of only two pilots to have earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for a flight that took place solely in Michigan. He earned the medal for being part of a 1923 rescue mission from Selfridge Field to Beaver Island, in northwest Lake Michigan. After World War II, he was awarded another unusual award, the Soviet Order of the Patriotic War, 1st Class. The West Point graduate retired as a colonel in 1945. (U.S. Army photo)
