127th Wing Photos

Aboard the USS Levy (DE-162), Japanese Rear Admiral Shigematsu Sakaibar (left) signs a document surrendering control of Wake Island to Marine Brig. General Lawson H. M. Sanderson (right) and U.S. forces, September 4, 1945. Sanderson, who is called the “father of dive-bombing” by the Marines, once crashed an experimental aircraft into Lake St. Clair during a 1922 flight from Selfridge Field. Sanderson was buried in mud in the lake bottom after the crash, but managed to dig himself out to emerge unharmed. (U.S. Navy photo)
