U.S. Army 2nd Lt. John Patton Boyle

Photo of Army 2nd Lt. John Patton Boyle, taken from a 1918 yearbook, Carroll College. Boyle died in a 1918 aircraft crash at Selfridge Field, Mich. He was the first pilot to die in an aircraft crash at what is now Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Boyle died while working as an instructor pilot at Selfridge, preparing pilots and aerial gunners for combat duty in World War I. A street on the base is named in his honor and a plaque was made and affixed to the original base gym. It is now in the base museum. (Photo courtesy of Carroll University)
