Global Guardian 2012

Senior Master Sgt. Mark Kaufmann communicates with a group of Airmen under his command at the Georgia National Guard Combat Readiness Training Center, Feb. 19, 2012. Kaufmann, a member of the 127th Civil Engineer Squadron at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich., was participating in the Global Guardian training exercise, Feb. 13-24. During the exercise, more than 1,300 Soldiers and Airmen of the National Guard, as well as members of the Royal Netherland Air Force and Canadian Air Force, trained to respond to a terrorist attack or natural disaster in the U.S. As a senior noncommissioned officer, Kaufmann was called upon to provide not only technical expertise as an emergency management specialist, but to provide leadership to junior enlisted personnel. Approximately a half dozen Airmen from Selfridge participated in the exercise, which included military personnel from more than 20 states. In addition to allowing the participating personnel to work on their individual skills, the exercise provided an opportunity for team building across the various units of the National Guard.
