Cold Weather Ops

Staff Sgt. David Klemanski, a crew chief with the 127th Maintenance Squadron, is bundled up against the cold as he performs a pre-flight inspect on an A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich., Jan. 22, 2013. The temperature at Selfridge was 2 degrees above zero Fahrenheit as a flight of A-10 launched from the base shortly before noon – 30 degrees below freezing. The wind chill factor was estimated on the flight line to be 16 degrees below zero. During operations in such extreme conditions, Airmen take extra precautions, including wearing extra layers of clothing and rotating work schedules. Klemanski said in extreme cold weather, crew chiefs have small engine heaters that they use to pre-warm the A-10’s engines prior to initial start-up. (Air National Guard photo by TSgt. Dan Heaton)
