Col. David C. Schilling is seen in this 1950 photo. Schilling, a World War II ace in the European campaign, was the commander of the 56th Fighter Group at Selfridge Air Force Base in the late 1940s. In 1948, he developed the plan for and led the first transatlantic flight of U.S. Air Force fighter aircraft, taking off from Selfridge. (U.S. Air Force photo)
