A P-80 Shooting Star from the 56th Fighter Group at Selfridge Air Force Base is seen in flight in this circa 1948 photo. Later re-designated as the F-80, a flight of these aircraft left Selfridge on July 20, 1948, to make the first transatlantic flight by a U.S. Air Force jet fighter. (U.S. Air Force photo)
