National Commission on the Structure of the Air Force to Visit Selfridge Published Sept. 11, 2013 National Commission on the Structure of the Air Force WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Members of the National Commission on the Structure of the Air Force will visit Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan and conduct a public hearing in nearby Chesterfield Township on Sept. 14, 2013. This site visit and hearing are part of the Commission's congressionally mandated mission to comprehensively study the U.S. Air Force and its three components--the active, reserve, and Guard--for an independent analysis that will determine if and how the Air Force's structure should be modified to best fill current and future mission requirements with available resources. The report and recommendations are due to the President and Congress on Feb. 1, 2014. Given the short timeline for the Commission to prepare its report, commissioners are making site visits at selected installations that represent the varied, multi-component missions that airmen conduct. At Selfridge, commissioners will examine how an Air National Guard installation operates in support of Air Force Guard, reserve and active forces, as well as major tenant units, which include the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, and Customs and Border Protection Agency. Commissioners will receive briefings and interact with unit personnel of all ranks to gain insights into force structure issues that impact mission readiness, capability and effectiveness. At the public hearing, Commissioners will hear from state officials on homeland defense and other matters affecting the use of the Guard. Representatives of the Michigan military community and state and local governments have also been invited to submit statements. Commissioners will spend Saturday morning at Selfridge visiting units and interacting with personnel. The Commission will conduct the public hearing 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Chesterfield Township Meeting Room, 47275 Sugarbush Road, Chesterfield, Mich. Commissioners scheduled to attend this site visit are the Vice Chairwoman, the Honorable Erin Conaton; Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Harry "Bud" Wyatt, ANG; and Dr. Janine Davidson.
