Civil Engineers respond to broken sanitary sewer line

SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mich. --  Repair work has begun on a sanitary sewer line here which was discovered broken on Friday afternoon.

The break, near the intersection of George Avenue and Wilbur Wrights Blvd, resulted in a sanitary sewer overflow into Lake St. Clair into Lake St. Clair. 

A berm has been built up to deter further runoff into the stormwater drain. Temporary pipe repair has also taken place. The permanent repair is anticipated on Wednesday, according to the Base Civil Engineer Utilities section. 

As a precaution the Selfridge Environmental Management Office is conducting additional E. coli sampling. Results from testing will be released as soon as that information is available.

In accordance with regulatory protocols, Selfridge has contacted the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to inform them of this incident. Harrison Township officials have also been notified as well since the base resides within the township.

Comprised of approximately 1,700 personnel and flying both the A-10 Thunderbolt II and the KC-135 Stratotanker, the 127th Wing supports Air Mobility Command, Air Combat Command and Air Force Special Operation Command by providing highly-skilled Airmen to missions domestically and overseas. The 127th Wing is the host unit at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, which marks its 97th year of continuous military air operations in 2014.
