Web Site Additions Mark Selfridge's 96th Anniversary

SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mich. --  Several additions have been made to the 127th Wing's History & Heritage web site, as the wing's home station, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, celebrates a birthday. The additions have been made to coincide with the base's 96th anniversary, July 1.

Added to the site are a lengthy chronology of the Michigan Air National Guard and a graphic illustration highlighting the history of the base and showcasing some of the more notable aircraft that have been assigned to the base.

The chronology was culled from a larger Air National Guard chronology maintained at the national level. While not exhaustive, it includes many major highlights featuring the 107th, 171st and 172nd squadrons, the three flying squadrons historically assigned to the Michigan ANG. The 107th and 171st are now assigned to Selfridge and the 172nd is assigned to Battle Creek.

The graphic, which is can be downloaded from the site, was a team project created by 127th Wing photographer John Swanson and photojournalist TSgt. Dan Heaton, with contributions by photographer Brittani Baisden.

One of the oldest military air fields in continuous service, the military first took possession of Selfridge Air National Guard Base on July 1, 1917. The first flight took place on July 8 and formal flight operations began on July 16, 1917. Today the 127th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard is the host unit at the base, which also houses units of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection.
