127th Wing Names Top Airmen

The 127th Wing honored nine Michigan Citizen-Airmen as Airmen of the Year for 2017, capping a year that saw more than 300 members of Wing deploy to combat zones.

 

Speaking at the Wing’s annual awards ceremony at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Brig. Gen. John D. Slocum, 127th Wing commander, said the honorees exemplified the very best traditions of the Air National Guard – service to state and nation.

 

The Airmen of the Year for 2017 are:

• Senior Airman Caleb Jenkins, 191st Operations Support Squadron, Airman of the Year

• Tech. Sgt. Ryan Lauhoff, 127th Comptroller Flight, Noncommissioned Officer of the Year

• Master Sgt. John Resseguie, 127th Security Forces Squadron, Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year

• Master Sgt. Douglas Shippy, 127th Logistics Readiness Squadron, First Sergeant of the Year

• Capt. Robert Maclean, 127th Security Forces Squadron, Company Grade Officer of the Year

• Lt. Col. Thomas Sierakowski, 127th Mission Support Group, 127th Wing Commander’s Trophy

• Senior Airman Clifford Mua, 127th Wing Honor Guard Member of the Year

• Majors Brett Devries and Shannon Vickers, 127th Wing Safety Award

 

During the ceremony, Slocum recognized those 127th Wing members who deployed during the past calendar year. A number of the deployed Airmen are still in the process of checking in, recently arriving home after six months spent overseas. The deployed Airmen served in a wide variety of locations, but most were in the Middle East supporting Operation Inherent Resolve.

 

The past year also marked another major milestone for the 127th Wing: The wing’s home station of Selfridge Air National Guard Base marked 100 years of continuous military flight operations during the year. The base was the host of a major open house and air show in August to mark the event and the wing conducted numerous events both on and off the base during the year to mark the centennial. The last major event of the centennial celebration is a special display on the history of the base now open at the Detroit Historical Museum in downtown Detroit. That display continues during regular museum hours through Jan. 7.

 

Looking forward, Slocum said with most of the Wing scheduled to be at home station during 2018, a major focus of the Wing will be on individual and unit readiness.

 

“Even as we reflect upon all the past accomplishments of this awesome Wing, our focus is and must always continue to be on the future,” the general said. “This Wing has a proven record of excellence that is second to none. We will continue to build on that record as we move into our second century of service.”

 

The 127th Wing is comprised of approximately 1,700 Citizen-Airmen and is the largest organization in the Michigan Air National Guard. The Wing operates both the A-10 Thunderbolt II, an air-to-ground attack aircraft, and the KC-135 Stratotanker, an aerial refueling platform.
