Additions Made to Selfridge Heritage Web Page Published Dec. 31, 2013 By TSgt. Dan Heaton 127th Wing Public Affairs SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mich. -- Comprehensive chronologies of the Michigan Air National Guard, operations of the World War II-era Tuskegee Airmen in Michigan and a 124-page history of the first 12 years of operations at Selfridge Field were among the highlights added this year to the History & Heritage page of the 127th Wing's home page. The History & Heritage page was created in spring 2013, in advance of Selfridge Air National Guard's 96th anniversary. While the page is focused on the history of the base and of the Michigan Air National Guard's 127th Wing, many of the stories found there help track the larger history of American Air Power. For example, one story found on the page tells of the first time American fighter aircraft were able to fly from the U.S. to Europe - in a flight that originated at Selfridge in July 1948. Another story recounts how military aircraft based at Selfridge were used for a rescue mission on an island in northern Lake Michigan in the winter of 1923. Those interested in more recent history of the base can find a full listing of facts & figures as they relate to the events of Sept. 11, 2001. A number of official Air Force fact sheets detail the current missions and operations of the two Air Force flying squadrons assigned to the base. For those interested in more of a "hands-on" approach to history, a section of the web page offers details and highlights about planning a visit to the Selfridge Military Air Museum, which is open for visitors on weekends between April 1 and Oct. 30 and can be visited by special arrangements at other times. Additional items planned for the heritage page in 2014 include a "This Day in History" feature for the Michigan National Guard. The History & Heritage page can be found at: http://www.127wg.ang.af.mil/index.asp Comprised of approximately 1,700 personnel and flying both the A-10 Thunderbolt II and the KC-135 Stratotanker, the 127th Wing supports Air Mobility Command, Air Combat Command and Air Force Special Operation Command by providing highly-skilled Airmen to missions domestically and overseas. The 127th Wing is the host unit at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, which marked its 96th year of continuous military air operations in 2013.
