Holding a military identification card is a fundamental part of service and, could even be considered, part of the uniform. Customer service specialists at the 127th Force Support Squadron run the ID card office at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, ensuring both current and former servicemembers have the right cards.
On a recent Saturday drill morning, Airman 1st Class Hailey Brewer received cross-training from Senior Airman Heather Burks on the common access card validation process.
“I enjoy working in this environment,” said Brewer, who has been a member of the 127th FSS for over four years. “The people I work with are like family to me — my family away from home.”
Military members have a “common access card,” used to access computer networks and gain access to facilities and installations around the world. Civilian employees of the military hold a type of CAC while retirees and military dependents hold ID cards that access facilities and services but do not access computer networks. The cards also are tied into the defense enrollment eligibility reporting system, ensuring military members and their dependents are enrolled in healthcare insurance and other benefits programs.
Brewer’s training included how to validate a member’s enlistment dates, family dependents, add an updated photo to the database and print a new CAC. Senior Airman Heather Burks, who has worked in 127th FSS customer service approximately four years, Burks works on a variety of personnel actions, including completing paperwork when Airmen re-enlist. She says she loves the structure of the military.
“Working with the paperwork, I see the names of a lot of people in the wing, so when they come in to get an ID card, I get to put a face with the names,” Burks said. “I like meeting new people, so this is a great job for me.”
While the 127th FSS office here is available to support personnel and retirees from all military services, most of their customer base consists of Michigan Air National Guardsmen serving at Selfridge.
The 127th FSS ID card office is in Building 304 at Selfridge. Appointments are set Tuesday and Friday, between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. in half-hour increments. Customers without appointments can walk in on Wednesday or Thursday between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. with 127th Wing Members given priority in the morning.
