Airman Conduct Training with Flares at Selfridge

SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mich. --  Airmen at Selfridge Air National Guard Base will be conducting several readiness drills on Saturday, Oct. 13, which will include the firing of a number of signal flares into the air over the base. Some of the flares may be visible in the residential areas surrounding the base.

Airmen at the base conduct a wide variety of training exercises throughout the year, to prepare for various contingencies. The training with the signal flares simulate one possible scenario of how a downed air crew could signal their location to a rescue operation.

Comprised of approximately 1,700 personnel and flying both the A-10 Thunderbolt II and the KC-135 Stratotanker, the 127th Wing supports Air Mobility Command, Air Combat Command and Air Force Special Operation Command by providing highly-skilled Airmen to missions domestically and overseas. The 127th Wing is the host unit at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, which marked its 95th year of continuous military air operations in 2012.
