Why I Serve -- Smith

After serving eight years in the active duty Air Force, Staff Sgt. Nick Smith did not want to give it all up for pursuits in the civilian sector.

Rather than separating from the military Smith decided to continue his career as a member of the Michigan Air National Guard. Now, he serves in the 127th Logistics Readiness Squadron at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

Having a desire to complete his schooling and now taking on fatherhood responsibilities, Smith decided that becoming a traditional Guard member would make it possible to be successful in all areas.

"The Guard gives me the flexibility to attend school, support my family and still continue to serve my country," Smith said.
