The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds streak across the skies above the
base air traffic control tower during the Selfridge Centennial Air Show and
Open House Aug 18. The three-day event drew well over 200,000 to the base
celebrating 100 years of aviation heritage and service to the state and
nation. Selfridge Air National Guard Base opened on July 1, 1917, created as
a training facility for pilots and aerial gunners in World War I, and has
been used as a military air field continuously since opening.
