  • Selfridge Moves Into 2nd Century

    The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds streak across the skies above the base air traffic control tower during the Selfridge Centennial Air Show and Open House Aug 18. The three-day event drew well over 200,000 to the base celebrating 100 years of aviation heritage and service to the state and nation. Selfridge Air National Guard Base opened on July 1, 1917, created as a training facility for pilots and aerial gunners in World War I, and has been used as a military air field continuously since opening.

Local community members and civic leaders met with members of the 127th Wing Wednesday during a scoping meeting at the Wheeler Community Center in Clinton Township, Mich. to discuss F-35 basing at Selfridge. The meeting, a component of the Air Force’s environmental impact study, provided a forum to collect public comments and concerns regarding the F-35 bed down proposal. Even though Selfridge was not one of the two bases selected as a preferred alternative to base the F-35, the base is still considered a reasonable alternative.

Tom Kott, an equipment engineer with the 127th Civil Engineering Squadron, Roads and Grounds shop here, diligently clears the snow on base today, operating a heavy-duty Oshkosh snowplow meant for clearing runways, in nearly white-out conditions. Efforts to clear base roads, parking lots, runways and airfield ramps, is necessary to allow our mission to continue unimpeded. Local weather reports estimate a total snowfall of approximately 12 inches this weekend, with the heaviest snowfall of the current storm falling between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. today. Despite the snow accumulation and temperatures in the 20's degree Fahrenheit, Selfridge Air National Guard Base never "closes," it remains open under any prescribed contingency.
Senior Airman Robert Wodowski, defender with the 127th Security Forces Squadron here, secures a KC-135 Stratotanker on the flight line today, This weekend, Woodowski and other personnel of the 127th Wing will continue to endure harsh weather conditions as a significant winter storm commences upon the metropolitan Detroit region. Local weather reports estimate snowfall to accumulate up-to one-foot and sub-freezing temperatures for the next few days. Selfridge Air National Guard Base personnel remain ready for any prescribed contingency and a blizzard during Michigan's winter season provides an opportunity to practice resiliency and readiness while dealing with a well-known, yet hard-to-predict adversary: Mother Nature.
