Memorial Day message

Airmen and families of the 127th Wing:

As we head into Memorial Day weekend I would like to take a minute to remember and honor those who have sacrificed so much for our country to defend and preserve the freedoms that we enjoy today.  We should always remember that the freedoms that we so often take for granted were purchased at a price. For some - the price they paid was lives changed and sacrifices with family, friends, and loved ones. For others - it includes the ultimate sacrifice.

As we remember those who have fought for and defended this great country, I would like to also salute those who will pay the price for our freedom in the future.  Thomas Jefferson is attributed the quote; "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty."  So we also honor those who will pay those prices for our continued future liberty.

I would like to thank those who currently serve our country, our state, and defend the cause of liberty in so many diverse and remarkable ways.  As our band of brothers and sisters in arms are, and will be, in harm's way, I hope we remember that there are 127th Wing members not with their families this weekend.  They are serving a cause greater than themselves. I could not be any prouder of the 127th Wing and the truly amazing work you all do.

Memorial Day is a day to remember our nation's heroes - past, present, and future.  It's also a day to celebrate those freedoms that have been established and preserved with a price.

I'd like to salute you - and your service, sacrifice, and dedication.

Have an outstanding and safe holiday weekend.

Respectfully,

Doug "Odie" Slocum, Brig Gen, MIANG
127th Wing Commander
