Kaufmann, a member of the 127th Civil Engineer Squadron at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich., was participating in the Global Guardian training exercise, Feb. 13-24. During the exercise, more than 1,300 Soldiers and Airmen of the National Guard, as well as members of the Royal Netherland Air Force and Canadian Air Force, trained to respond to a terrorist attack or natural disaster in the U.S. As a senior noncommissioned officer, Kaufmann was called upon to provide not only technical expertise as an emergency management specialist, but to provide leadership to junior enlisted personnel. Approximately a half dozen Airmen from Selfridge participated in the exercise, which included military personnel from more than 20 states. In addition to allowing the participating personnel to work on their individual skills, the exercise provided an opportunity for team building across the various units of the National Guard. More than 20 law enforcement agencies trekked to Selfridge Air National Guard Base Feb. 9, 2012, as the FBI held a field office visit and table top exercise designed to guide actions that would be utilized during an actual weapons of mass destruction contingency response in the Detroit area. Several Michigan National Guard entities were present, including the 51st Civil Support Team, many members of the 127th Wing's first responders and Mission Support Group, and representatives from the state Emergency Operations Center. Blair, along with about 300 other members of the 127th Wing, returned home after a 4-month deployment to Afghanistan, where they flew, maintained and supported the A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft.
