For SSgt. Craig Fenton, an aircraft hydraulics system journeyman with the 191st Maintenance Squadron, work continues on the flightline at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich., on July 20, 2011, as a heatwave rages in the area. Airmen of the 127th Wing rely on hourly Wet Bulb Globe Temperature readings to determine work/rest cycles and proper water intake for those working in extreme conditions. "Obviously, anyone working on the flightline is focused on getting that jet out. It's our responsibility as leaders to ensure the safety of the Airmen out there working," said Maj. MSgt Lloyd Miller takes a Wet Bulb Globe Temperature reading July 20, 2011, at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich. The thermometer device has a computer designed to find the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, which measures not just temperature, but overall physical stress created by weather conditions. The computer takes into account things like humidity, wind speed and radiant heat exposure. Sergeant Miller is a bioenvironmental engineer with the 127th Wing.

Doug Champagne, commander of the 107th Fighter Squadron, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich., recalls his experiences on Sept. 11, 2001, during a June 21, 2011, meeting of the Selfridge Base Community Council. Champagne was airborne in an F-16 Falcon, returning from a morning target practice mission, when the terror attacks occured. At far right is Lt, Col. On June 10, 2011, the Robotic Systems Joint Project Office at Selfridge Air National Guard Base held their third annual Robot Trot. Over 100 runners competed in the 5K race. Several other runners also competed in a 10-mile race to qualify for the Army 10-Miler, which will be held in Washington D.C. later this year. Selfridge Airman awarded Bronze Star

Technical Sgt. Supapon Lawson, an aircrew flight equipment specialist with the 107th Fighter Squadron, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for exceptional meritorious service at a ceremony held at Selfridge Air National Guard Base on June 6. Lawson served as an aircrew life support technician during a deployment to Iraq in which she volunteered for several tour extensions, which lengthened her stay to almost two years. On hand during the medal presentation ceremony were Lt. Col. Douglas Champagne, 107th Fighter Squadron commander, TSgt. Photo of Army 2nd Lt. John Patton Boyle, taken from a 1918 yearbook, Carroll College. Boyle died in a 1918 aircraft crash at Selfridge Field, Mich. He was the first pilot to die in an aircraft crash at what is now Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Boyle died while working as an instructor pilot at Selfridge, preparing pilots and aerial gunners for combat duty in World War I. Selfridge Air National Guard Base is home to units of all five branches of military service and several agencies of the federal Dept. of Homeland Security. Chief Master Sgt. Keith Edwards and Chief Master Sgt. Robert Dobson exchange a handshake during the ceremony in which Edwards relinquished his position as the command chief master sergeant of the 127th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard, a role that is now held by Dobson.
