Service Flags

Michigan Air National Guard Technical Sgt. Dan Heaton raises the U.S. Air Force service flag at the main gate of Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich., April 30, 2013. Flying in the background are the service flags of the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy. Not seen in this photo, but also flying at the main gate at Selfridge are the flags of the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Border Patrol. Selfridge, which is one of the oldest active military air fields in the nation, is one of the few installations in the U.S. to be home to all five branches of the Armed Forces, as well as several agencies of the Dept. of Homeland Security, such as the Border Patrol, which has its Detroit Sector headquarters on Selfridge. The official U.S. Flag for the installation flies outside of the base’s operations building. The U.S. military took possession of what is now Selfridge Air National Guard Base on July 1, 1917. The first flight took place at the base on July 8, 1917, and official flight training began on July 16, 1917. Selfridge was one of several military airfields that began operation in the summer of 1917 in preparation for U.S. participation in World War I. (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Brittani Baisden)
