Commentary by Col. Philip Sheridan
127th Vice Wing Commander

12/6/2012 - SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mich. -- I would like to wish the entire 127th Wing happy holidays and let's all look forward to a great new year. I want to express my gratitude in having had the opportunity to work with you as a fellow member of the 127th Wing. All of you have shown your talent and dedication with exemplary performance in day to day training, inspections, training deployments and AEF deployments throughout the year! Around the world, 127th Wing Airmen are "Standing Ready."

I want you to know that you are the 1% of our nation that is willing to answer the call to defend our country. This commitment is commendable. On top of this individual commitment to service, it takes teamwork for the 127th Wing to accomplish our multiple missions. To make this happen, I am counting on each and every one of you to do your job in accordance with rules, regulations, instructions and the Air Force Core values.

Our business-as-usual has continued at Selfridge even as congress is still working on the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act. Regardless of the politics involved, we still have our A-10 and KC-135 missions to fly and maintain, and I know the 127th Wing will keep providing the best Airmen in the Air Force performing these missions. It is admirable how you all have buckled down and continue on with your dedicated service.

Speaking of politics, sequestration is still a bullet that remains to be dodged. The possibility of these cuts remains as January 2013 is right around the corner with no definitive answers or decisions at this time. And while the possibility and ramifications of sequestration looms, ultimately the DoD could re-propose 127th Wing cuts as part of the 2014 budget process, or any number of unforeseen plans for our unit and others across the United States. Because of this, I encourage you to continue to stay on top of your Air Force training requirements, additional duties and responsibilities as a deployable member of the 127th Wing. If you watch the news you can see the world is a very volatile place and our job is to be ready to answer our nation's calls. I also urge you to take care of your families. Ensure you keep your family ready with contingency plans in case you are mobilized.

Keep up the good work 127th Wing, because you have set the bar high. Continue to work together with your fellow co-workers and your organization, be that your Flight, Element, Squadron, Group, Wing, Air Guard, Air Force, and Country. I am very proud of all of you and thank you for your service
to our great country.
